Summary
The stone under his cheek is cold, slick with dark river-moss and smelling faintly of stagnant silt. Julian groans, fingers curling instinctively into the grit. A migraine hammers behind his temples like a blacksmith’s sledge. The last thing he remembers is an oath — and the sound of it breaking.
Rust and Aether is a weak-to-strong progression fantasy about a boy who starts at the bottom with two incompatible powers, a body that barely holds together, and a promise he intends to shatter the heavens over.
The two cores are the problem. Rust is what he was born with — the common, despised affinity of broken iron and corroded steel, the power of street rats and scrap heaps. Aether is what he was never supposed to have. They do not mix. They grind against each other every time he draws on either one, and the longer he uses them together, the less certain it is that he will survive the process.
He climbs out of the Nether-Chasm anyway. There is a milk-stone pit, a wash-pool where two voices argue in the dark, a black market bargain he can barely afford, and the ignition of an aether seed that should not have taken. Then the world above starts paying attention: a gathering at the plaza, stone eggs that test affinity, a pillar of silver light, secret observers who are not as secret as they think, and a meridian dilemma that has no good answer. An unsolicited offer arrives from someone with the authority to make refusing it expensive.
The progression here is slow, physical and costly. Julian does not get handed power; he gets handed problems and has to keep his body intact long enough to solve them. Every breakthrough is paid for in something he feels afterwards.
For readers who like cultivation-adjacent progression, dual-core magic systems with real mechanical conflict, and strength that is earned through damage rather than destiny.

A migraine hammered behind his temples like a blacksmith’s sledge, each throb bringing a wave of nausea that tasted of cheap sour wine and copper.Too much to drink, he thought, blinking against the amber twilight. The graduation dinner... Frank bought that awful grain liquor...Then the second set of memories hit him—not as a gentle recollection, but as a hot spike driven straight into his brain. It wasn't a greasy tavern back in his hometown. There were no neon signs, no screech of city traffic, no greasy takeaway boxes. There was only the cold wind sweeping down from the mountain, the smell of crushed pine needles, and seventeen years of quiet, hopeless misery.Julian sat up so fast his vision swam. He stared at his hands. They were thin, calloused across the palms and knuckles, red-raw from scrub brushes and coarse straw brooms. He wore a tunic of dyed-grey hemp, stiff with dried mud and frayed at the cuffs. Beside him, lying half-in and half-out of a puddle of dark water, was a…
