Summary
“You’re leaning into the shaft with your stomach, boy,” Master Sona wheezes from his three-legged stool by the draft-kiln. Forty winters in the damp have swollen the old man’s knuckles to the size of walnuts. It is not glamorous work, and the dye vats smell like a tannery’s regret — but it is a trade, and a trade is a life. Corin sets his jaw, shifts his boot in the lime-dust, and pulls the birch blade through the steaming vat again.
Then something falls out of the sky and into the vat, and it is not a bird.
I Accidentally Caught a Falling Goddess is a dark progression fantasy that runs from dye vats to divine war, following an apprentice with no prospects, no name, and no particular future who ends up holding the one thing every power in the world is willing to kill for.
What follows is a climb with teeth. A rot-king’s tithe that has to be paid in something other than coin. A broken lineage that turns out to matter a great deal to people who never asked about it before. Bells of the White Dawn, a trespass in the lower cloister, an ambush in a birch copse, a tournament of wooden staves that is not really about the staves. A summons to the Raven Tower that is not a request. Blood-hounds on the road to Thanecroft. A gate that falls. And a sacrifice nobody in the story walks away from unchanged.
The progression is earned and the cost is always visible: every step up the ladder of this world is paid for in something Corin actually has, which for a long time is almost nothing. That is what makes it worth reading.
For readers who like a slow start that pays off hard, a magic system with teeth, and a protagonist whose advantages all come with a bill attached.

The old man was wrapped in three layers of greasy flannel, his knuckles swollen to the size of walnuts from forty winters in the damp. He tapped a brass-rimmed spectacles case against his knee with a dry, rhythmic clack. “Use the pivot of your pelvis or your lumbar will give out before you’re old enough to take a wife. Look at me. I piss rust three mornings out of seven because I hauled timber with my spine instead of my legs.” Corin set his jaw, shifted his left boot two inches into the slippery lime-dust on the floorboards, and pulled the birch blade through the steaming mash again. “The wool is catching on the bottom rivets, Master Sona. The cooper didn’t countersink the copper bolts.” “The cooper was drunk on turnip gin, which is how every honest tradesman in Skan-Tor spends his saint’s days,” Sona muttered, clearing his throat and spitting a dark glob into the ash-pan. He tucked his spectacles into his sleeve and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Sit down for two minutes before you drop…
