Summary
In the six hundredth winter of the Sun-Gilded Lineage, the Luo River floods anyway. Dynasties keep their records in bronze and blood; the river keeps its own, in silt.
The Weight of the Plow is a bronze-age epic fantasy of blood, fate and empire — and it follows the people who actually hold a civilization together, the ones whose names never make it onto the bronzes.
The lineage has ruled for six hundred years, which is long enough for everyone to forget that it was ever contested. The book opens with the binding of a leviathan and moves through the white ape’s dirge, phantoms of the high peak, a bloodless giant, the slaughter of a nine-headed hydra, and the dirge of five princes. There is a broken sundial, which is the moment the calendar stops being trustworthy. There is a fall of the sun-bow, a shepherd in the ashes, a shadow-blade and nine tripods, a necromancer king and an iron tyrant. A sage is visited three times. A siren of silk. The deposition of a sun-queen. A vault of eternal wine, an unsacrificed altar, a campaign of the just, and the twilight at Mingtiao.
When the lineage finally fractures, it is not the sword that decides what survives. It is the plow. The harvest that does not come, the field that gets planted anyway, and the people who keep the food moving while kings argue about which of them the bronze belongs to.
The cast spans generations, and the book is willing to let a character’s life end in a single chapter if that is where the record ends. What accumulates is not a hero’s journey but a civilization’s.
For readers who like historical epic with real weight, mythology treated as history, and casts that span generations rather than a single lifetime.
Prologue

Up on the limestone bluffs, the wild mulberry trees dropped their leaves in midsummer, dry black husks that crunched under a boot like glass.Men spoke of the Canopy in those days, but they spoke of it the way a trapped fox looks at the sky through a deadfall trap.In the high city of Bo, the King drank from golden chalices filled with wine brought down through lead pipes from the deep vaults. He did not know the cost of a bushel of rye, nor had he ever felt the bite of an oak plow-handle tearing the calluses from a man's palm. When his ministers told him the peasants were eating white river-clay to fill their bellies, he laughed into his roasted meat and said the earth must be sweet if the peasants were so eager to swallow it.Power, when it sits too long in a stone house, forgets that it was born in the dirt.It forgets that every bronze…
