Summary
Mud. It is always the mud that breaks you first. Not the monsters, not the exhaustion — just the endless, sucking red clay of the Weeping Gorge that feels like it is trying to drag you down into a shallow grave. Silas wipes a mixture of rainwater and grit from his eyes and keeps walking, because the alternative is lying down in it.
He has no core.
In a world where every fighter is measured by the core they were born with, Silas has no talent, no bloodline, no destiny and no number. What he has is the people beside him, a willingness to keep standing up, and a talent for being useful that nobody has figured out how to put on a register yet.
The Coreless Vanguard is a dark progression fantasy epic about the member of the party the system does not know what to do with. The climb runs from rain and rust through a hunter’s trap, a basilisk’s shadow, collateral damage nobody budgeted for, and the weight of a trophy that is heavier than it looked. There is a sky galleon, a posting to the soot, a master called Vulcan, echoes in the iron, and a ten-strike trial that was designed for people with cores. There is an iron phalanx, an astral nexus, a butcher who enters without knocking, and veil-keepers who are not what the records say. There is a thousand-pound pen, which is either the stupidest or the most important thing in the book.
The party matters as much as the build here. Silas does not get stronger in isolation — he gets stronger because the people around him keep choosing him, and because he keeps making that choice worth repeating.
For readers who like grimdark progression where the party matters as much as the build, underdog protagonists who earn it through work, and fight scenes with consequences that stick.

Just the endless, sucking red clay of the Gorge that felt like it was trying to drag you down into a shallow grave.Silas wiped a mixture of rainwater and grit from his eyes, his breathing ragged. He leaned heavily against the trunk of a dead ironwood tree. His left side throbbed with a dull, sickening rhythm. Bruised, maybe cracked. He had slipped on a slick patch of moss three hours ago, tumbling down a small ravine like a sack of grain. A stupid, clumsy mistake. So much for the noble blood of Vance. He spat a glob of dirty saliva into the brush. The air here tasted of ozone and old pennies. They called it the Gorge because of the red minerals bleeding from the rocks, but right now, it just smelled like rust. His fingers cramped around the hilt of his sword. It was a cheap thing, blunt and heavy, the leather grip slick with his own nervous sweat. He was shivering. He couldn’t tell if it was the freezing rain or the sheer, undeniable terror of being out here. Just one kill, he told himself. He…
