Unsleeping Patron - Rupture at the Abyss
Half grease and half rendered fowl fat, the torch fuel sputtered, sputtering in the midnight wind with a thick, sulfurous stench that clung to the roof of Gideon’s mouth. He walked forty paces behind the transport sled, his left knee clicking in its dry, familiar rhythm. Around him, the middle section of the column surged through the dark in a dense, suffocating mass. Thousands of boots scraped against the shale, accompanied by the wet, rhythmic weeping of exhausted children and the heavy groaning of wooden cart axles. Above their heads, the mobile golden dome of the Slate held back the sky, but the darkness outside the seven-mile line was absolute, black as a pitch-lined coffin.Gideon adjusted his grip on his ash pole. His leather gloves were worn through at the thumb, the freezing shale air numbing his knuckles until he couldn’t feel the wood grain.”Captain,” Samuel Wu called from ten yards back, his voice strained through a wool scarf wrapped twice around his face. “The third ox on the left runner is limping. If it drops “Gideon didn’t get to answer. The ground beneath the middle column didn’t shake. It tore.A wet, cannon-like THWACK split the midnight air, followed instantly by a sound like a thousand wet bedsheets being ripped in half simultaneously.Ten paces ahead of Gideon, directly in the center of the dense crowd of three thousand refugees, the earth cracked open. It wasn’t a ravine of shale. A vertical curtain of dark, liquid flesh erupted straight out of the ground, shooting sixty feet into the air and slicing the march line cleanly in two.It had no skin, no eyes, no bone. It was a solid wall of writhing, dark-purple meat that bubbled and melted as it rose, exhaling a cloud of scalding, sweet-smelling steam that smelled of turned offal and burning lye.”Back!” Gideon screamed, his voice cracking as he lunged forward, grabbing Wu by the collar of his coat and throwing him backward into the shale. “Get back from the curtain!”The warnings were useless. The crowd had no room to retreat. The momentum of five thousand panicked refugees behind pushed the front ranks directly into the rising wall of meat. The moment human skin touched the dark, melting flesh, there was no fire, no sparks. The victims didn’t even have time to scream. Their bodies dissolved on impact their trousers, their coats, their hair, and their bones melting into thick, bubbling pools of black-red fluid that flowed down the sides of the curtain like hot syrup.Over a thousand people vanished in three seconds. A entire section of the march line was converted into a fifty-yard pool of steaming blood that sizzled against the cold shale.Panic erupted like an explosion in a powder magazine.”The fog! It’s melting us!” someone shrieked from the dark. The crowd broke. Thousands of people turned wildly, trampling those behind them as they tried to claw their way back toward the rear guard. Women were knocked into the bubbling blood pools; men tripped over dropped luggage, their skulls crushed under the boots of their own neighbors. The Slate’s golden dome above their heads shivered violently. Driven by the catastrophic spike in collective human panic, the amber aegis pulsed, its edges shrinking fifty yards as the Miasma outside pressed inward like a closing fist.Gideon drew his heavy iron knife, his teeth grinding together so hard his jaw throbbed. “Wu! Form a wedge! Hold the rear ranks! Don’t let them push into the Miasma!”Before Wu could raise his ash pole, a streak of cold, crimson light cut down through the dark sky.It wasn’t a falling star.Silas dropped out of the upper clouds, his ten-meter blood-wings folded tight against his spine as he slammed into the shale five yards from the melting curtain of flesh. His bare feet hit the blood-soaked stone with a heavy, wet thud, spraying crimson foam over his canvas trousers. He didn’t look at the screaming crowd. He looked at the Sequence 8 Anomaly blocking the path.”Gideon,” Silas rasped. His voice was different. It carried a double layer of sound the golden, resonant chime of Mind-Light layered over the dark, guttural rasp of the Eldritch Physique. He reached to his waist, unhooking the Blood-Lantern with his left hand while his right fist locked around the indestructible green hawser of the Ancient Treant.”Hold the column,” Silas ordered. He stepped directly into the bubbling pool of human blood. The dark, melting flesh of the Anomaly reached for him. Dozens of dark, tendriled arms erupted from the vertical curtain, their wet, skinless fingers snapping toward his throat.Silas opened the brass cowl of the Blood-Lantern completely.A blinding, unquenchable glare of cold red fire and golden Mind-Light erupted from his chest and the lantern simultaneously. The two forces didn’t mix; they wrapped around each other like two twisting iron cables, driving straight into the center of the dark meat-wall.CRACK.Silas’s spine bowed backward under the sheer, unimaginable spatial pressure.Gideon watched in horror as the bones in Silas’s right forearm shattered a loud, dry snap-snap-snap as his radius and ulna snapped into splinters under the strain. Black, necrotic tears of pure blood leaked from Silas’s eyes, running down his pale, hairless cheeks and dripping off his chin into the cold fire.”Silas!” Gideon shouted, taking two steps forward, his iron knife raised.”DON’T TOUCH IT!” Silas roared. His golden heart flared through his chest a visible, sun-like orb burning behind his ribs. With his shattered right hand hanging useless, his Eldritch Physique erupted. Dozens of thick, pitch-black tentacles burst from his elbow, wrapping around the Ancient Treant’s green hawser, and drove the indestructible willow branch straight into the center of the dark curtain. He twisted his shoulders and pulled.Spatial reality bowed. The sixty-foot wall of dark, melting flesh groaned under the combined torque of Stage 3 Mind-Light, the Blood-Lantern’s cold fire, and the Treant’s willow cable. A vertical seam ripped open down the center of the Anomaly a ten-foot gap of clear, open air that revealed the northern trail on the other side.Black blood poured from Silas’s ears and mouth. His left leg bone cracked, the tibia splintering through his skin, but his shadow-soul held the gap open, his black tendrils locked like iron clamps around the edges of the tearing meat-wall.”RUN!” Silas screamed, his black blood tears splattering against the shale. “GIDEON! DRIVE THEM THROUGH!”Gideon didn’t hesitate. He didn’t check Silas’s pulse or stop to wipe the blood from his own face. He turned to the paralyzed, screaming crowd, raised his iron knife high above his head, and drove the flat of the blade into the shoulder of the nearest man.”MOVE!” Gideon bellowed, his voice echoing over the roar of the melting flesh. “THROUGH THE GAP! RUN OR DIE!”The human tide surged forward.Thousands of refugees, screaming, weeping, and dragging their children by their arms, poured through the ten-foot tear in the wall of dark meat. They ran over the slick, bloody stone, their boots splashing through the rendered remains of the first thousand victims, passing within inches of Silas’s shivering, bone-shattered frame.Silas stood in the center of the blood pool, his leg broken, his arm shattered, his face mapped in black blood, holding the weight of a Sequence 8 Anomaly on his bare shoulders while forty-eight thousand people ran past him into the night.
