One Inch Tall, One Power a Day - The Duct King
She clicked her aluminum LED flashlight to its tightest beam.
Sitting fifteen inches away on top of the central logic housing was the King.
It didn’t look every bit the field pest or a sewer crawler.
[Tier-1 Chassis Raid Boss—The Duct Rat King] Scale: 250.0 mm (Approx. 10 inches / 2.6x Player Scale) Telemetry: All Core Attributes at 10.0 Threshold Vitality: 88 / 88 Special Attribute: Heavy Kinetic Charge / Structural Crushing Bite
The beast didn’t squeak. It didn’t twitch its whiskers or back away into the shadow of the wiring looms.
It turned its wide, flat head toward the flashlight beam, its dark red ocular orbs reflecting the amber light with a cold, glassy intelligence that showed zero fear. A low, wet wheeze leaked from its spiracles, lifting the greasy fur along its spine into a spiky crest.
Wren didn’t drop into a stance. A wide stance was a luxury she couldn’t afford.
The space between the logic housing and the outer aluminum wall was less than six inches wide— a vertical steel alley where an off-center step meant falling into the primary drive belt below.
“Ten across the board,” Wren muttered, her left hand tightening around her five-inch carbon needle until the steel shaft bit into her leather glove. “Let’s see if those numbers are real.” The thought never finished.
The Rat King didn’t wind up or give a preliminary hiss. Its ten-point Agility unlocked its thick, muscular hindquarters in a split-second blur, launching its three-pound body straight off the logic housing in a low, flat trajectory that cut through the flashlight beam.
The speed was terrifying.
Wren tried to pivot on her heels to drop into a defensive roll, but the narrow clearance between the transformer coils caught her right shoulder. She threw her left arm up, presenting the curved chitin spines of her Thorn Bracer to absorb the impact.
KABOOM!
The collision felt like getting struck in the chest by a tossed bowling ball.
The sheer kinetic mass of the ten-inch beast smashed through her guard. The chitin spines on her bracer bit into the rat’s greasy belly, but the momentum carried both of them backward, slamming Wren’s back flat against the rigid steel ribbing of the outer chassis wall.
CRACK-SNAP.
A sharp, white-hot spike of agony exploded through the left side of her ribcage.
The breath was blasted out of her lungs in a short, wet wheeze, her visor instantly fogging with a thick layer of warm condensation. Her vision swerved into a dizzying vortex of gray static and yellow spots as two of her floating ribs groaned, cracked, and shifted against the intercostal muscle tissue.
SYSTEM ALERT: Severe Blunt Trauma Sustained. Vitality: 38 / 64 (-26 HP). Condition: Internal Rib Fracture / Respiratory Restriction.
Wren’s boots slid out from under her, her rear hitting the aluminum floorboards hard enough to rattle her teeth.
The Rat King didn’t bounce off. It landed directly on her lap, its four spiny paws digging into her Softscale trousers, its massive, turnip-shaped head dropping downward to drive its four-inch yellow incisors straight through her collarbone.
“Get off me, you filthy bastard!” Wren shrieked, her voice cracking with pure, panicked adrenaline.
Pulling the needle was the last thing she meant to do. She raised her right fist—still wrapped in the heavy, mirrorpolished grip of her Skystone Short Blade (+10 Attack)—and drove the flat of the pommel straight into the rat’s left eye socket with a short, brutal jab.
THWACK.
The steel pommel struck the ocular bone with a dull, wet thud.
The Rat King gave a high, ear-splitting shriek, its head snapping back three inches, thick yellow fluid spurting from its ruptured eye. Its yellow teeth grazed the polycarbonate collar of Wren’s suit, leaving a deep, white gouge in the hard plastic instead of snapping her throat in two.
Wren didn’t wait for it to recover.
Every inhale felt like someone was shoving a dry pine wedge under her sternum, but her 5.0 Strength and 5.0 Agility forced her body to move despite the screaming nerves in her ribs.
She wedged her left boot heel into the Rat King’s belly, locked her knee, and kicked upward with a desperate, full-body heave.
THUMP.
The three-pound rat was thrown off her lap, its broad back slamming hard against the overhead copper bus-bar. A shower of bright blue electrical sparks erupted from the wire loom as the rat’s matted fur bridged two live contacts, the beast squealing in rage as the current singed its hide.
Wren scrambled to her knees on the floorboards, coughing up a small mouthful of copper-tasting phlegm that spattered across the inside of her face shield.
Her left arm hung loose against her side, her ribcage burning with every shallow hitch of her chest.
“Can’t brawl with it,” she wheezed, her thumb fumbling with the leather snap of her right-side holster. “Too heavy… too much mass in a small pipe.”
The Rat King landed back on the logic housing four feet away.
Its left eye was a bloody, ruined hole, but its remaining right eye burned with red, rabid fury. The Singed fur along its flanks gave off a nauseating stench of scorched fat and burnt ozone. It crouched low, its thick, scaly tail lashing against the sheet metal in a fast, furious rhythm—thumpthump-thump-thump—preparing for a second, fatal charge to crush her chest for good.
Wren drew the matte-black titanium frame of her Arcane Pistol (+5.0 Base Attack) with her right hand.
Her bare palm hit the brass contact plate on the backstrap.
Aetheric Link Established. Mana Reservoir: 38 / 38.
“Come on,” Wren rasped, her eyes cold as ice behind her fogged visor. “Jump again, you big rat.”
The Rat King launched itself off the housing without an instant’s wait, its jaws wide, its remaining eye locked onto her throat.
The gap measured four feet, no more. Well within the auto-correction dead-zone.
Wren didn’t aim for its chest. Its head wasn’t her target.
She waited until the monster’s snout was twelve inches from her face shield, raised the titanium muzzle upward forty-five degrees, and rammed the barrel straight into the creature’s gaping, open maw.
The steel barrel wedged between its upper and lower incisors, locking its jaws open.
“Eat it,” Wren snarled.
She pulled the trigger three times in rapid, mechanical succession.
THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!
Three high-caliber, sapphire-colored kinetic energy bolts erupted from the muzzle at point-blank range, detonating directly inside the Rat King’s throat and cranial vault.
CRACK-BOOM-SQUELCH!
The compressed kinetic payload had nowhere to go. The energy expanded violently within the enclosed skull cavity, blowing the back of the rat’s head apart in a blinding flash of blue light, vaporized brain matter, and scorched bone fragments.
The concussive blast wave knocked Wren backward again, her head clipping the aluminum wall, while the Rat King’s ten-inch, headless carcass slammed with the force of bag of wet cement.
The central drive vault went dead quiet.
The blue energy wisps drifted slowly from the pistol’s muzzle, rising toward the humming logic array above.
Wren lay flat on her back on the hot aluminum floor, the three-pound dead rat pinning her legs down, her hands trembling so violently that the titanium sidearm slipped from her glove and clattered onto the metal tiles.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: Tier-1 Chassis Raid Boss—[The Duct Rat King] Neutralized. Solo Clearance Evaluation: Exceptional (Under Physical Trauma).
A thick stream of yellow system announcements unrolled across her retinal interface, illuminating her fogged visor in a warm, golden glow:

Wren lay there for two long minutes, listening to the heavy, ragged sound of her own shallow breathing.
Every time her lungs expanded more than half an inch, the broken ribs on her left side flared with a dull, sickening grind that made her vision swim in yellow spots.
“Two gold… eighty-eight silver…” she croaked through her dry lips, a dark, breathless laugh bubbling up in her throat before ending in an abrupt, pained wince. “You really were… a fat wallet, weren’t you, buddy?”
She forced her right glove to move, shoving the heavy, headless rat carcass off her lap.
Moving with excruciating slowness, her knees shaking under her weight, she hauled herself upright using the edge of the logic housing for support. She picked up her Arcane pistol, slid it back into its leather holster, and retrieved the Five-Star Full-Recovery Potion she had set aside earlier.
She pulled the cork with her teeth and tossed the deep indigo serum down her throat in one long swallow.
Gulp.
The effect was immediate and shocking.
It didn’t feel like water or alcohol. The fluid transformed into a wave of intense, icy cold that shot straight through her esophagus, pooling in her solar plexus before radiating outward into her ribcage like liquid nitrogen.
Inside her chest, the sharp, jagged pain of the broken ribs stuttered.
She could feel the fractured bone edges aligning, the intercostal muscle fibers contracting with a tight, prickling twitch as the high-tier magical serum forced rapid, cellular regeneration. Within twenty seconds, the dull grind in her left side faded into a mild, bruised stiffness.
Vitality Restored: 64 / 64 (100%). Condition: Rib Fracture Repaired. Mild Muscular Fatigue Remaining.
Wren took one deep, full breath through her nose. Her lungs expanded to maximum capacity—zero pain, zero resistance.
“Five-star stuff,” she murmured, wiping a drop of blue serum from her jaw. “Worth every silver coin.”
She reached out with her right hand, uncorked the five targeted attribute potions she’d just looted from the boss drop, and drank them down in rapid succession.
Gulp. Gulp. Gulp. Gulp. Gulp.
The familiar, electric heat flooded through her shoulders, calves, and spine.
Strength: 6.0 (Base 5.0 + 1.0) Defense: 6.0 (Base 5.0 + 1.0) Agility: 6.0 (Base 5.0 + 1.0) Vitality Cap: 74 / 74 (+10 Cap) Aetheric Reserve Cap: 48 / 48 (+10 Cap)
Six points across the board. Her health bar was now a thick, dark green slab of seventy-four points, while her mana reservoir sat at forty-eight—enough for nearly ten full-powered kinetic shots from her Arcane Pistol.
She swallowed the emerald growth elixir last.
Her skeleton stretched with a series of sharp, hollow pops in her femurs and lower back, pushing her eye level slightly higher over the gear housings.
Current Stature: 105.0 mm (10.5 cm / +10.0 mm gain).
Ten and a half centimeters. She had finally cleared the ten-centimeter mark—four inches tall.
Wren stood up straight, stretched her arms over her head until her shoulder joints clicked cleanly, and swept the Rat King’s headless body and the surrounding loot into her haversack utility compartments.
She walked out of the central drive vault, ducked beneath the primary brass gears, and headed back down the aluminum ductwork toward the maintenance hatch.
It was 3:30 AM on Day Ten.
The rats were dead, her ribs were healed, her pockets held over a thousand copper bits, and the pink machine outside was waiting to hand over her mattress.
