One Inch Tall, One Power a Day - The Chieftain's Breeches
Strapped over his chest was a heavy breastplate hammered from a crushed sardine tin, bound with thick copper wire, while his lower body was encased in a pair of stiff, dark brown breeches fashioned from cured rat leather.
In his right fist, he held a massive iron-spiked mace—a three-inch chunk of solid railroad spike welded to a thick hickory handle.
He stopped ten feet from Wren’s quartz rock, his small, yellow-rimmed eyes burning with pure, rabid intelligence as he scanned the blood-stained snow.
“Human,” the Chieftain growled, his voice a low, wet rumble that sounded like gravel grinding in an iron drum. He spoke in crude, broken System-mapped English, his yellow tusks jutting from his lower lip like crooked nails. “You kill my scouts. You take my copper.”
Wren didn’t answer. She stood balanced on her heels, her charcoal Softscale suit blending into the gray snow, her hands hanging loose at her hips within an inch of her twin Skystone blades.
“This field mine,” the Chieftain snarled, raising his heavy spiked mace and slamming the iron head against a frozen dandelion stem, shattering the plant into a dozen ice chips. “You give pack. You give tree door. Maybe I let you walk north.”
Wren let out a short, dry breath that was almost a laugh.
“You’ve been talking to Tyler Judd, haven’t you?” she murmured, her voice flat and deadpan behind her face shield. “Same speech. Same big talk.”
The Chieftain didn’t understand the reference, but he understood the disrespect in her tone.
He drew a deafening, biological roar—a sound that blew the ice dust off the nearby clover leaves —compressed his thick, heavy thigh muscles, and charged.
He moved with surprising speed for an eight-inch monster. His 5.5 Agility propelled him across the ten-foot gap in less than a second, the heavy iron mace swinging downward in a terrifying, diagonal arc aimed straight at Wren’s head.
The kinetic output of that nine-point-five Attack strike would have crushed her Softscale helmet as an eggshell crushes, driving her head six inches into the quartz gravel.
Wren didn’t try to block it with her cleaver.
Her 15.0 Agility kicked in before the mace could complete the upper third of its arc.
Velocity Slip.
To the Chieftain, the gray human standing before him simply vanished.
Wren didn’t jump backward; she glided sideways, her right boot pivoting on the ice in a tight, ninety-degree sidestep that brought her body flush against the Chieftain’s left flank, well inside the long reach of his mace handle.
The heavy iron mace slammed into the quartz rock behind her with a deafening KABOOM, shattering the softball-sized boulder into three pieces of flying gravel.
While the Chieftain was still struggling to recover his momentum from the over-swung strike, Wren acted.
Her hands moved with the spare, practiced economy of a butcher working the bone line.
The cleaver wasn’t her first move. She locked her gaze on the thick, cured rat-leather breeches wrapped around the monster’s waist.
Sleight of Hand.
Her right palm flared with a sharp, cold prickle as her ethereal phantom hand surged outward from her chest, broader and sharper than before, its ghostly fingers wrapping around the thick copper buckle of the Chieftain’s leather pants.
Skill Deployed: [Sleight of Hand]. Critical Raid Extraction Achieved!
Acquired: Tier-1 Cured Leather Breeches (Defense +2.0).
SNAP.
The copper buckle gave way with a brittle metallic pop.
The thick, heavy rat-leather pants vanished instantly from the Chieftain’s waist, transferring straight through the dimensional conduit into slot four of Wren’s haversack.
The Goblin Chieftain froze mid-recovery.
The sudden, total loss of his lower clothing left his thick, green, hairless legs entirely bare to the twenty-two-below arctic gale. The freezing wind slapped against his exposed thighs, sending a sharp, involuntary shiver through his groin muscles.
He looked down at his own bare, green waist in utter, unadulterated shock, his yellow eyes widening until they looked like saucer plates.
“What…” the Chieftain stammered, his gravelly voice dropping two octaves into a high, bewildered squeak. “My… my pants…”
Wren didn’t wait for him to process the embarrassment.
Her passive [Blade Mastery] skill took over her motor cortex with cold, surgical efficiency.
She dropped her center of gravity two inches, planted her boots into the hard ice, and drove the needle point of her Skystone Short Blade (+10 Attack / Bleed Proc) straight upward into the soft, unarmored groin membrane exposed between his thighs.
CRACK-SQUELCH.
[CRITICAL WEAK-POINT STRIKE ACHIEVED!] Base Attack: 5.0 + 10.0 (Skystone Blade) = 15.0.
Weak-Point Kinetic Multiplier: 3.0x. Total Output: 45.0 Kinetic Damage. Bleed Proc Engaged: Target suffers 25 points of continuous damage over 5 seconds.
The three-inch, mirror-polished steel blade punched clean through the soft pelvic tissue, driving four inches deep into the Chieftain’s lower abdominal cavity before hitting the back of his tin breastplate.
The Chieftain let out a shriek that wasn’t a roar—it was a high-pitched, breathless, glass-shattering scream of pure, biological agony that echoed across fifty yards of frozen crabgrass.
His yellow eyes rolled up into his head. The heavy iron mace slipped from his numb fingers, clattering with the sound of jackknifed tractor-trailer.
Wren stepped over his falling shoulder, drew her heavy Skystone Cleaver (+10 Attack) with her right hand, and brought the broad, blackened blade down in a brutal, twohanded executioner’s chop across the back of his exposed neck.
CRACK-THWACK.
The cervical spine separated instantly.
The Chieftain’s massive, turnip-shaped head rolled six inches across the hard ice, its yellow tusks biting into the frozen chickweed, while his eight-inch body crashed into the snow with a heavy, hollow thud.
The clearing fell still, every sound swallowed at once.
The blue interface text flared across Wren’s field of view in a series of bright, golden system notifications that illuminated her face shield:
Solo Clearance: Tier-1 Goblin War-Chieftain (Alpha Leader). Regional Milestone Achieved.
Special Title Awarded: [Goblin Slayer] Title Parameters: When engaged in combat against any goblinoid entity (Common, Centurion, or Chieftain), offensive kinetic output is increased by a flat +30%. Weak-point critical strike probability increased by +15%.

Wren lowered her cleaver, her chest rising and falling in slow, controlled breaths.
She wiped the green hemolymph off her blades using a scrap of wild clover, slid them back into their hip scabbards, and knelt beside the dead Chieftain.
She picked up the shiny gold coin—a thick, heavy disc forged from pure minted bullion, stamped with an emblem of a coiled dragon—and dropped it into her leather currency pouch beside her silver stack.
Then, she opened her haversack and pulled out the item she’d pickpocketed off his waist midcombat:
[Cured Rat-Leather Breeches] Category: Lower Body Armor. Defense: +2.0 | Cold Resistance: Level 1. Condition: Clean (Siphoned prior to combat).
Wren held the small, dark brown leather pants between her gloved thumb and forefinger, looking at the crude copper buckle and the greasy seam work.
“Two points of defense,” she muttered, her mouth twitching into a brittle, dry grin behind her mask. “Not bad stats. But I’m sure as hell not wearing a goblin’s pants.”
She tossed the breeches straight into the intake hopper of her Primary Multi-Function Workstation back at the tree via her dimensional storage interface, writing DISASSEMBLE on the chalk slate mentally.
Clang-crunch.
The workstation swallowed the leather breeches, shredding the cured hide down into two clean rolls of non-woven polymer rubber and a small copper buckle.
Wren stood up from the snow, stomped the ice off her Softscale combat boots, and checked her character overview:
Survivor: Wren Hanlon (Pennyroyal) Title Equipped: [Goblin Slayer] / [Black Nemesis] Strength: 5.0 | Defense: 5.0 | Agility: 15.0 (Trait Active) Vitality: 53 / 53 | Aetheric Reserve: 33 / 33 Current Stature: 95.0 mm (9.5 cm)
She was eighty-four copper bits away from four full gold coins, her perimeter fence was locked behind thirty-eight points of Iron-Burl armor, and she had just stolen the pants off an eight-inch warboss before chopping his head off.
She turned around, faced north toward her hollow oak fortress, and set a steady, gliding sprint across the ice.
It was 1:30 PM on Day Nine.
The sun was high, the snow was bright, and Wren Hanlon had a warm kettle waiting on her stove.
