- The Chimera Egg and the Heavy Door
She scrambled through the entrance curtain on hands and knees, dragged the bottom of the woven reed mat down, and collapsed flat on her back across the cool ceramic floor.
Above her, the wooden ceiling of the first-floor landing remained solid, silent, and empty.
“Still here,” she rasped, staring at the dark whorls of heartwood six inches above her nose. “Still in one piece.”
She lay there for ten minutes without moving a finger, listening to the steady drip-drop of the atmospheric condenser dripping into the iron basin across the room. Her lungs burned with the lingering, chemical tang of burnt kerosene and boiled formic acid, but her pulse was finally dropping below a sprint.
She sat up, leaned her back against the stair stringer, and pulled the haversack around to her lap.
Two heavy iron boxes dropped onto the tile with twin metallic thuds. Both were stamped with polished, double-bronze star insignia on their corner brackets—the primary hoard dragged straight out of the Queen’s birthing chamber while the hive burned behind her.
Wren picked up the carbon steel needle, slid the point under the latch of the first Two-Star Cache, and levered the iron plate upward.
Snap.
The lid swung back smoothly on internal brass pins. Inside lay two cylindrical glass ampoules fitted with threaded brass caps, resting alongside a molded cuirass of dark, pebbled leather lined with woven brass wire.
Wren picked up the first vial. Unlike the hazy elixirs from the One-Star crates, the fluid inside was dense, oily, and glowed with a faint amber light.

It didn’t taste of water; it burned going down with the heat of cheap moonshine, sending a hot wave through her clavicles and down her arms. The sensation was heavier, colder—a layer of lead sheeting settling beneath her skin.
She pulled up her diagnostic overview:
Strength: 1.7 (Base 0.7 + 1.0)Defense: 1.3 (Base 0.3 + 1.0)
Agility: 0.3
Vitality: 20 / 20
Aetheric Reserve: 10 / 10She picked up the leather cuirass. The hide was stiff, cured with waxy insect fat that smelled of pine pitch, but the interior was padded with soft, quilted linen. She unzipped the outer canvas smock of her hazard suit, strapped the cuirass over her wool undershirt, and pulled the smock back over her chest. The extra bulk was noticeable, but when she struck herself hard in the solar plexus with the heel of her hand, the blow diffused across her entire ribcage without stealing a breath.
“Better,” she muttered. “Much better.”
She turned to the second Two-Star Cache and popped the latch with her needle.

Wren carefully lifted the egg from its foam cradle. Nearly two inches long, ovular and heavy, with a semi-translucent shell that felt like cold horn. Beneath the ivory surface, a dark, segmented silhouette shifted slowly against a pool of nutrient fluid, its jointed limbs folded tight against a broad thorax.
The binding scroll beside it was written on a scrap of thick, cured vellum, sealed with a dollop of hardened black wax.
Item: Companion Binding Matrix. Usage: Break seal over unhatched biological unit. Establishes permanent neural tether and sub-space companion sanctuary.
Wren broke the wax sigil between her thumb and forefinger. The vellum dissolved into a ribbon of pale violet light that snaked through the air, wrapping around the ivory egg in three tight, burning coils. The horn-like shell cracked with a sharp snap.
Fluid leaked onto the floorboards, smelling faintly of sugar and wood resin.
A pair of thick, serrated mandibles pushed through the fracture, shearing the shell apart like wet cardboard. Out scrambled an eight-inch-long soldier ant, its glistening exoskeleton a mottled, gunmetal gray that shifted to iridescent purple under the lamplight. Its primary head capsule was broad, armored with thick occipital plates, and its legs ended in curved, double-hooked claws that bit into the oak floorboards with solid clicks.
It shook the amniotic slime from its antennae, stood upright on its six spiked limbs, and turned its compound eyes directly toward Wren.
A faint, warm pressure bloomed behind her forehead—a second pulse beating in time with her own heart.
Companion Unit Bound: Chimera Vanguard Soldier.
Velocity Rating: 6.0 m/s (Mounted Acceleration).
Natural Weaponry: Formic Acid Spray (Level 1), Crushing Mandible Shears (Kinetic +3.0).
Sub-Space Sanctuary: Online.
The creature clicked its mandibles together softly, dipped its armored head, and nudged the rubber toe of her boot with its left antenna.
Wren loosed a slow breath, reaching out with her gloved hand to touch the smooth, cold curve of its head plate.
“You look like a burnt lump of coal. I’m calling you Cinder.”
The ant clicked twice in response, transmitting a wave of simple, uncomplicated contentment through the mental tether.
She threw her leg over the broad saddle junction between Cinder’s thorax and abdomen. The carapace was surprisingly wide, ribbed with natural chitinous ridges that gave her thighs a solid purchase. She gave a slight nudge with her heels, and the ant surged forward across the floor with terrifying, vibration-free speed, stopping on a dime before its nose touched the far wall.
“No more kicking a scooter through the mud,” she whispered, grinning beneath her visor.
She tapped the sub-space icon in her interface. Cinder dissolved into a swirl of dark gray mist, vanishing into a dedicated biological storage slot where he could rest and feed on stored insect matter without taking up physical floor space.
With the pet secured, Wren turned her attention to the biggest liability in the tree: the front entrance. The woven grass mat had kept the drafts out, but as last night’s ant invasion had proven, a hanging curtain was an open invitation to anything with mandibles.
She pulled up the Fortified Door blueprint she’d memorized from the hive archives:
Schematic: Reinforced Perimeter Gate. Requirements: Timber x20, Heavy Mechanical Deadbolt x1.
She had purchased a heavy steel deadbolt from a survivor named IronSmith_99 an hour ago for two paper cups of water. But instead of standard timber, Wren opened her haversack and selected twenty of the dense, mineralized Iron-Burl Planks she’d shredded from the empty cache boxes. She dumped the materials into the synthesis array.
Synthesis: Material substitution confirmed. Hardwood replaced with Iron-Burl composite.
A flash of dull crimson light bathed the first floor. Lying on the tile was a massive, pitch-black door panel, two inches thick, three feet tall, and bound with heavy steel cross-straps and three-inch barrel hinges.
Wren hauled the door over to the entrance cleft, lined up the hinge pins, and shoved the heavy assembly into the rough oak frame.
The living bark around the threshold groaned. Tendrils of fresh cambium wood reached out from the oak, wrapping around the steel hinge plates and anchoring them directly into the tree’s heartwood core with a series of wet, popping crunches. The Iron-Burl door swung shut with a deep, pressurized thud, the mechanical deadbolt sliding into the reinforced receiver with a crisp, solid clack.
A district-wide golden broadcast flashed across the top of her retinal display:
Regional Announcement: Survivor [Pennyroyal] has completed the first Fully Fortified Tier-1 Bastion in District 6699.
Structural Defense Rating: 10.0 (Immune to all baseline insect penetration).
Milestone Rewards Dispatched to Personal Inventory.
Wren leaned her forehead against the cool, mineralized black wood of the door, her shoulders slumping in pure relief.
She opened her pack to check the milestone payout:
Universal Vendor Discount Card (10% Tier Reduction)
Plush Leather Armchair x1
Stamped Copper Currency x50
She manifested the leather armchair right in the center of the ground floor, dropped her rear into the deep, tufted cushion, and groaned aloud as the soft leather conformed to her aching lumbar.
Beside her, the storage trunk sat loaded with emergency biscuits and fresh water. The door was sealed with carbonized iron-burl. The toilet was plumbed, the condenser was dripping, and she had an eight-inch armored soldier ant sleeping in her neural sub-space.
She checked the digital clock on her HUD: 1:15 PM.
“Day Four,” she murmured, resting her head against the leather wingback and closing her eyes.
“Let the bugs come.”
