Summary
Leeches bloom in clusters along Corin’s calves, fat with marsh water and whatever thin blood he has left to spare. He does not stop to burn them off. Stopping means sinking, and sinking in the Silt-Fens of Marrowfen means dying with your boots full of cold grease. Behind him are five scouts at a border outpost with their throats opened by clean, practiced strokes — forged iron driven into hardened leather. Someone wanted that crossing quiet. Corin is walking toward whatever the maps refuse to name.
Butcher’s Ladder is a dark fantasy of war, magic, and an empire that is already rotting from the inside — it simply has not fallen yet. Corin has nothing left to lose, which in a place like this is less a weakness than a form of currency. What he has to climb is a hierarchy built on butchery: every rung costs more than the last, every ally has a price, and the people at the top did not get there by being kind.
The road runs from the fens to Sylvanford’s crimson robes, through goblin caves beneath Cairnford, into the politics of a magister’s hall and the furnace where ivory harpoons are made for hunting things that should not still be alive. There is an arena of gilded ribbons where the crowd decides what a man is worth. There is a council of bone and spire where the decision gets made anyway. And underneath all of it, a dead empire’s machinery keeps turning, grinding up everyone who tries to use it.
Corin’s progression is not a gift and not a curse. It is a series of transactions, and the ledger is always visible. He gets stronger the way a man gets richer in an abattoir — by learning exactly where the value is and being willing to stand in it.
For readers who like their fantasy grim, grounded, and unafraid of consequences, with a magic system that charges for everything it gives.

Stopping meant sinking, and sinking in the Silt-Fens of Marrowfen meant dying with your boots full of cold grease. For three days, the swamp had smelled of nothing but sulfur, decaying alder roots, and the sweet, heavy rot of the five scouts he’d left behind at the border outpost. Clean, practiced strokes had opened their throats, the unmistakable mark of forged iron driven into hardened leather. Corin dropped into a crouch behind a moss-slick hummock, his lungs hitching on a knot of phlegm. He spat into the black water. His stomach was a hollow fist, knotted around a vile paste of crushed marsh-beetles and the raw carcass of a spotted vole he’d killed with his thumb behind a deadfall yesterday noon. It tasted like damp copper and moss, but it kept his legs moving. Behind him, somewhere past the drowned willow grove, a reed snapped. The sound wasn't loud. A heron wouldn't have cared, but a heron didn't have an eight-foot Wolfkin tracker tailing it through forty miles of standing bog. The…
